Does Coning Equal a Diastasis?

Diastasis can be one of those most-feared things among pregnant and postpartum moms, so let’s debunk some things here.

Does coning/doming cause diastasis postpartum?? Or, does coning/doming mean you for sure have a diastasis?

These questions came up twice this week as I coached some of my postpartum clients through my FIGR:Postpartum app program – so let’s chat!

Coning / doming is simply what you’d see when pressure is mismanaged in our core system.

If our deep core isn’t properly engaged, the pressure can “escape” to the weakest part of our core which would be down the midline in between our two “six pack” muscles.

Coning is just feedback that our pressure management strategies might not be working too great during that intensity/movement.

Coning during pregnancy does not mean you’ll get diastasis postpartum

AND

Coning during postpartum does not mean you have diastasis!

**Side note: after week 36 of pregnancy, ALL moms will get diastasis – that’s how our body adapts to accommodate our growing baby during pregnancy! It’s postpartum diastasis that we are trying to manage.

When to Manage Coning

What we do want to watch is this: consistent or repetitive coning from a specific movement or intensity during your pregnancy workouts.

This could potentially affect the muscle tissue in that area, which then could maybe make it tougher/longer to heal postpartum.

When it comes to training postpartum, we also want to limit any stimulus that results in that coning symptom. We are trying to heal this area, so repeated outward and/or mismanaged pressure will only delay the healing process.

At the end of the day, we don’t need to be afraid if we see coning occur – just more aware!

We can try to adjust some things to make it happen less, and if we are unable to control that pressure it may be a sign to modify or remove that movement. 🤗
